9 things you NEED to know before tattoo removal
We frequently get asked the same questions before we carry out professional laser tattoo removal so we’ve summarised them here to ensure you can be confident going forward that it’s right for you:
#1 What’s the best type of laser for tattoo removal? Q-switched lasers that generate a high-powered beam of laser light in an extremely short pulse are the most suitable lasers for tattoo removal treatment.
#2 How is the treatment carried out? In a professional clinic, the skin will be cleaned and then the laser applicator is passed over the tattoo releasing quick pulses of light.
#3 How does the treatment feel? Most people will tell you the sensation is similar to a hot pin prick or the flick of an elastic band.
#4 What will my skin look like after? An instant whitening of the skin is seen after treatment, but this fades quickly. The treated area can be a bid tender for a few hours and maybe a bit red for a couple of days.
#5 Are there any side effects? Very rarely the skin may become lighter or darker, or a small blister may form. Change to skin texture and scarring is possible, though uncommon, and is more likely if any grazes are not allowed to heal naturally.
#6 How many treatments will I need? This varies depending on the density and colour of the ink and how old the tattoo is. Amateur tattoos are easier to remove (usually in 1 to 6 treatments). Professional tattoos vary considerably and some can take up to 15 treatments.
#7 How often do I have a treatment? Usually around 6 to 10 weeks apart.
#8 How long does each treatment take? It depends on the size of the tattoo but generally between 10-30 minutes.
#9 How do I know if it’s a professional clinic? Prior to treatment you should undergo a through consultation including medical history, etc. You’ll also have a test patch done and sign a consent form. In general, the clinic should also seem clean and hygienic as well and the staff should be professional and knowledgable.
